Mezzeri: a centuries-old textile tradition, reborn on your table

Mezzero Palmier Sofa Bed Cover, 100% made in Italy - The Napking

Few textiles carry as much history as the mezzero. A large decorative cloth, richly printed, once draped over shoulders and furniture alike — the mezzero has travelled across centuries and continents to become one of the most distinctive pieces in Mediterranean interior culture. At The Napking, we have reimagined this tradition in linen-cotton blend, available in three designs: Les Agrumes, Paranza and Bloom Art.

The origins: from Persia to Genoa

The word mezzero traces back to the Persian "muza", a term for a decorative cloth used as a shawl or table covering. It was through Genoa — one of the great commercial hubs of the Mediterranean — that this tradition took root in Europe. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the expansion of Genoese trade routes and the frequent docking of East India Company ships made these printed textile squares increasingly accessible, and demand grew rapidly.

By 1690, the first atelier producing mezzeri directly on Genoese soil had opened, soon followed by many others. What began as an imported craft gradually became a local one, woven into the identity of Liguria itself.

A textile of extraordinary technique

What made the mezzero truly remarkable was not just its beauty, but its method. At a time when fabric decoration in Europe was virtually unknown, the printed mezzero represented a production technique that was essentially unheard of in the Western world. Patterns were applied by hand using carved wooden blocks, layering colours with precision — a process that resulted in a vibrant, unique textile, its slight imperfections a testimony to its authenticity.

Motifs drew from the visual language of India and Persia: florals, paisleys, birds and, most iconically, the Tree of Life — a symbol of vitality and continuity that appeared at the centre of countless mezzeri across the centuries.

The Napking mezzeri: three designs, one tradition

Our mezzeri are crafted in a linen-cotton blend — a material that honours the tactile warmth of the original cloths while offering the practicality of contemporary living. Each of the three designs carries its own character.

More than a tablecloth

The mezzero has always been a versatile object — and ours are no different. Use it as a tablecloth for an informal lunch, a runner layered over linen, a throw across a sofa or a statement piece draped over a bed. Its proportions and print make it as much a piece of interior decor as a table textile.

This is the essence of the mezzero: an object that moves between spaces, between uses, between centuries — and never loses its beauty.
